UN Says, Sri Lanka is blocking Fuel to Wanni

Jul 1, 2007, 06:14 Digg this story!

The UN had written to the Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa on June 15 regarding their inability to provide the humanitarian services due to the fuel shortage in the Wanni region. It says Sri Lanka is blocking the fuel to Wanni.

UN also warned that continued shortage of fuel will severely affect the preservation of vaccines and essential medicines. According to UN officials in Sri Lanka even some of the allocated and approved fuel was not given the necessary clearance by the Defense ministry for the Transport of the fuel to Wanni. If the situations get worse as far as fuel concern the safety of the UN staff might be in trouble.

The UN's Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Frederick Lyons says that since March "none of the UN offices in the Wanni has received their fuel allocation, despite the written approval received from the Commissioner General for Essential Services (CGES) for April, May and now June."

"This unfortunate situation has compelled all UN agencies in the Wanni to reduce their operations dramatically, and cut the usage of generators and vehicles," Mr. Lyons said in the letter to Defense Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa.

The United Nations (UN) is maintaining many humanitarian offices in war stricken North and East of the country and elsewhere in the rest of Sri Lanka.

Joint UN North and East situation monitoring report released in May 2007 said, that implementation of many of its programme activities in the North and East of Sri Lanka was restricted due to the violence. Construction activities in Jaffna and Wanni were practically stopped due to severe shortage of fuel.
