MEP of EU Visit Sri Lanka to Discuss Trade and Rights Issues

Brussels - The European Union (EU) delegation under the leadership of Mr. Robert Evans, Member of the EU Parliament visiting Sri Lanka to asses the country’s rights situations as well as EU’s trade related issues first hand.

He is one of the well informed EU leaders on Sri Lankan issues. He continue to work hard to force a peaceful negotiated solution to the protracted conflict between the warring parties in Sri Lanka for very long time, according to the EU sources in Brussels.

The journalists in Sri Lanka increasingly under siege as Sri Lanka's labeled journalists and media personals as "cowboy defense analysts" and "enemies of the state,” which sparking renewed alarm among media rights activists about freedom of the press in Sri Lanka. Since August 2005, 12 media workers have been killed in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan state sponsored rights abuses with impunities against its own citizens were widely reported by many world reputable organizations such as HRW, AI, AHRC, UNHRC, ICRC, ACF, and IIGEP.

Sri Lanka became the second most dangerous place for the journalists and media personal next to Iraq, while Sri Lanka also most dangerous place for the aid workers to work, an observer in Brussels told TNS.

The prevailing state of lawlessness in Sri Lanka and impunity serves to perpetuate more violence and brutal crimes against humanity. The Sri Lankan government, has failed to fulfill the most fundamental obligation of any government “that is to safeguard and protect the security of its people, regardless of race, religion, and ethnicity,” she added.
