Breaking News: Sri Lankan Foreign Minister is shot dead

Latest: Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar was shot in the head Friday night just outside his private residence in Colombo and died an hour later after emergency surgery, according to hospital and police sources.

 

Kadirgamar had just returned to his private residence late Friday for a swim, after attending a function for the release of his new book, police said. As he walked toward the house from the pool, a sniper fired three shots, striking him in the head and chest.

 

Earlier Mr. Luxman Kadirgamar, 73, was shot and was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital in serious condition, according to government sources in Colombo. Mr. Kadirgamar was shot in his head by a sniper from a long distance at his residence in Wijerama Road, Colombo-7, sources further added.

The incident said to be took place between 10:00 p.m and 11:00 p.m on Friday night, according to the information available.

 

Mr. Kadirgamar is the trusted loyalist of President Chandrika Kumaratunga. He is a nominated member of parliament and played a crucial role earlier, discrediting the Tamil Tigers.

 

But Later under the current Norway initiated peace process; he is largely sidelined by the President. Lately there was an open battle between him and the current head of the government's Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process, Mr. Jayantha Dhanapala.

 

Recently in an article in the government run, Daily News, Mr. Kadirgamar urged the Norwegians to do the job or quit. He also said to be very closed to the Marxist JVP which quit the government in protest of the Tsunami joint mechanism, the government signed with the Tamil Rebels.
