Mahinda Rajapaksa inaugurates the construction of the International sports complex in Kilinochchi
July 21, 2011 // Comments OffSri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse inaugurated the construction of the first international sports complex in the north, which will be constructed at a cost of 325 million rupees in Kilinochchi.
The complex will consist 8 tracks and the indoor stadium will have facilities for 25 sporting events. It will also have an international standard swimming pool and many other facilities. The president addressing a meeting at the Kilinochchi Municipal council grounds said that the problem relating to non-possession of deeds for lands in the area will be solved expeditiously.
He said that sports should be developed in the north and players like Muttiah Muralitheran and Nagalingham Ediriweerasingham should come from the children of the north. A special project will be launched to help the widows who had suffered during the terrorist period. He said that under this programme the widows will be able to have a respectful life.
Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage thanked the President for taking leadership in construction of sports complexes like this. Minister Douglas Devananda also addressed the meeting. The President also made a cash contribution to the Sri Lankan netball player Tharjanie Sivalingham.
Mahindananda Aluthgamage and the parliamentarian Namal Rajapakse distributed sports kits to several schools and sports associations. Prime minister D.M.Jayarathne and several ministers and parliamentarians participated in the meeting, which was attended by a large number of youth from Kilinochchi.
